The latest report from the Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) shows interesting developments in Finland’s immigration trends during the first part of 2025. While work-based immigration has slowed due to economic challenges, student migration remains strong — and Sri Lanka is among the fastest-growing source countries.

Key Highlights from January–April 2025

20,546 total first residence permit applications were submitted in Finland (a drop of 8% compared to 2024).

The main reasons for moving to Finland were:

  • Family (7,541 applications)
  • Work (4,374 applications)
  • Study (2,667 applications)
  • Protection (3,028 combined asylum + temporary protection applications)

Student Migration on the Rise

2,667 study-based residence permit applications were submitted in early 2025 — a 7% increase from last year.

Most students came from South Asia, especially Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Vietnam.

Sri Lankan student applications doubled compared to 2024, making Sri Lanka one of the fastest-growing source countries.

Reasons behind this growth include:

  • Finland’s affordable, high-quality education.
  • Work opportunities during and after studies.
  • Family reunification possibilities.
  • Family Reunification Strong

7,541 family residence permit applications were submitted in early 2025, making it the largest category.

The biggest growth came from Asian countries — especially Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, and Bangladesh.

For Sri Lanka, the rise is mainly due to students bringing their spouses and children to Finland.

What This Means for Sri Lankan Students

The numbers clearly show that Finland is becoming an attractive education hub for Sri Lankan families. It’s not just about studying — it’s about building a future in Finland with your family.
